Types of waterproofing system installed
Type A
Trace installs Type A tanking systems, which create a physical barrier to keep water out. These systems can be applied internally using materials like cement-based slurries or resins, or externally using membranes and coatings. Successful installation depends on careful assessment, surface preparation, and correct application.
Type B
Type B waterproofing relies on the structure itself—usually reinforced concrete—to keep water out. Trace specialises in sealing the weak points, such as joints, cracks, service entries, and wall tops, to ensure a watertight finish.
Cavity drainage membranes and Type C
This form of protection functions by continuously collecting and removing penetrating groundwater, using a concealed drainage system, whilst the interior is isolated by cavity drainage membrane barriers. The use of a barrier system, combined with cavity drainage, is the preferred solution across many within the waterproofing industry.
A collaborative approach to waterproofing installation
At Trace Basements, our site staff work in close partnership with our in-house waterproofing designers to ensure project success. This direct collaboration enables immediate problem-solving when challenges arise during installation. When our teams encounter unforeseen site conditions—structural irregularities, unexpected water ingress, or substrate variations—our designers provide rapid technical support and modified solutions without compromising timelines.
This collaborative workflow means our designers remain engaged throughout the installation process, not just during planning stages. The continuous communication between field personnel and design specialists creates a valuable feedback loop that improves our waterproofing methodologies with each project. By fostering a teamwork culture, we deliver waterproofing solutions that perform.

Buildings in which we install waterproofing
Trace can design and install compliant waterproofing systems within virtually all newbuild and existing commercial and residential structures.
We have designed and installed for: universities, hospitals, churches, historic buildings, hotels, restaurants, libraries, art galleries, town-halls and even to the first floor of a shopping centre, when the facade was stripped to recess a 20m wide digital screen into the side of the building. We have advised on sensitive basement schemes in £500m developments, working on basements to 18m or four storeys deep beneath the streets of Manchester.
Dealing with Failed Waterproofing Systems installed by other companies
Not something our contractors hope anyone ever has to deal with! But if you should have requirement, then Trace have extensive experience investigating and developing remedial schemes to address complex issues, often where multiple previous attempts have fallen short.
A lot of our work in this field has been undertaken on behalf of structural insurance companies, dealing with structures less than ten years old. We also see and address issues with basement conversions often undertaken by non-specialist trades.

Waterproofing installation aspects we have to consider
Cavity drainage waterproofing systems must be designed and constructed to be maintainable, and where appropriately maintained, this ensures that they continue to function and protect for the longer term.
Our Waterproofing Contractors look after the Waterproofing System that we install for the long term, using in-house directly employed staff. This ensures peace of mind for our Clients that their systems.
