Preserving History with Modern Waterproofing Solutions

Since 2016, Trace Basement Systems has played a key role in the transformation of the Oldham Heritage & Arts Centre—a landmark project requiring both technical precision and respect for heritage preservation.

  • Close communication with project managers, architects, and contractors

  • Balancing heritage preservation with modern building performance

  • Comprehensive waterproofing system

  • Waterproofing systems to protect occupied habitable basement areas

The Challenge

The historic structure presented complex waterproofing requirements. Protecting the building’s integrity while ensuring long-term performance meant that conventional approaches wouldn’t be enough.

Our Approach

Led by specialist waterproofing designer James Hockey, Trace worked in close partnership with Tilbury Douglas and the wider design team from the earliest survey stages through to completion. Early design recommendations were developed into a bespoke waterproofing system, carefully balancing preservation concerns with functional performance.

Collaboration was central to success—our team maintained close communication with project managers, architects, and contractors to ensure solutions were fully integrated into the build process.

The Outcome

The result is a comprehensive waterproofing system that safeguards the heritage building for future generations while meeting modern performance standards. For Trace, this project demonstrates how hands-on expertise, early-stage involvement, and technical design can come together to protect and enhance important civic structures.
