Deck Waterproofing (buried roofs).

Podium decks or buried roofs are essentially a form of flat roof which resides above a basement.  They can have a variety of build-ups laid above them, from earth and soft landscaping, to tiling, paving and macadam.

Examples of key considerations:

  • Form of structure is particularly important.  Deck areas go through extremes of temperature in summer versus winter, and materials (forming structures) expand and contract thermally.  This can have detrimental implications upon adhered waterproofing systems and we’ve seen and dealt with such issues.
  • Management of rainfall is a key consideration.  Water must be able to drain off - you don’t want to create a reservoir over the deck.  Falls to outlets, outlets at the level of the waterproofing (not just at paving level above), use of deck specific drainage membranes, are all very important.
  • Perimeter details - upstands and cavity trays along the building line, and links between deck systems and external retaining wall tanking below.

We have worked with various systems (hot melt plastics, liquid applied, sheet systems) from various suppliers, and have strong opinions on what methods and systems are most practical and effective in different forms of structure.

Polyurea - hot melt liquid plastic, employed on aircraft carrier decks and North Sea oil rigs - very robust.

In particular a lot of what we’ve dealt with is failed systems and existing structures, which is more complex than new construction because you have a fixed depth of build up to work with, i.e. you can’t change depth of door sills etc. etc.

Deck waterproofing particularly requires careful consideration and we are selective in what we will and will not do.  If you have a requirement, please contact us and we can consider your requirements.
