Specialised Moisture Investigation at Tate Liverpool: Advanced Diagnostic Techniques in Heritage Conservation

Project Overview: Tate Liverpool Moisture Investigation
Our integrated approach revealed the delicate moisture dynamics of this historic building, supporting informed conservation strategies for the Tate Liverpool team.
Conducted over 150 calcium carbide moisture tests across all building floors
Executed comprehensive thermal imaging survey of internal masonry
Deployed drone-assisted external inspection for hard-to-reach envelope areas
Focused detailed analysis on 800mm-thick solid wall structures
Our investigation was designed to deliver a comprehensive understanding of moisture dynamics within the Tate Liverpool's historic structure. By integrating multiple diagnostic methods, we created a holistic assessment that would inform refurbishment decisions while preserving the building's integrity.
The survey employed a multi-method approach. Thermal imaging mapped surface temperatures to detect potential moisture pathways, while high-resolution drone surveys captured detailed external envelope imagery in previously inaccessible areas. Our extensive calcium carbide testing – spanning over 150 individual tests – provided quantitative moisture readings from within the masonry itself.
Navigating the complexities of 800mm-thick solid brick and stone walls required technical expertise. Each test location was selected to generate representative results, ensuring a comprehensive profile of the building's moisture conditions.
The final report delivered a clear, actionable summary that identified zones of persistent dampness, highlighted areas of concern, and recommended sections suitable for immediate dry-lining interventions. Our recommendations aligned with BS 6576 standards and best practices in historic building conservation, striking a balance between modern performance requirements and heritage sensitivity.
This case study illustrates our commitment to providing technically robust, conservation-minded solutions for the UK's most significant cultural landmarks. By integrating advanced survey technology with technical expertise, we empowered the Tate project team to confidently progress their critical refurbishment project.
