As a son joining the family business, it's not easy finding ways to stand apart from your MD/Father, when he's been such an exponent of the industry since starting the firm in 1974.
One such way is to do well in your exams, and as such I managed to win the CSRT (certificated surveyor in remedial treatments (damp, timber, wood boring insects) back in 2007, which is awarded to the highest schieving candidate in a given year.
More recently, my little brother David, an MRICS commercial Surveyor moving from private practice to Trace end of 2008, won the same CSRT award for 2009.
I took the CSSW exams (certificated surveyor in structral waterproofing) in 2008 and tried for but did not get the award (the best they would tell me is top 5). So, late last week we learned that David has now won the CSSW award for 2010, cue much (deserved) smugness from Dave, and contradictory feelings of pride and envy from myself!
Seriously though, I believe David is only the second person ever to achieve this (winning both) which is just fantastic and another feather in the cap for Trace Basement Systems generally... and besides, three out of four between the Hockey brothers is not bad going either in my humble opinion!
